I started working with bariatric surgery patients right out of nursing school, so about 10 years ago. And at the time when I interviewed for that first job I had no idea what bariatric surgery was. And it was so exciting to learn from the patients what a big difference this makes in their life. It is indescribable to see someone transition from being shy and reserved and inhibited by something that’s defined them so completely their whole life, and many patients will say their weight, they felt like that defined them. So, it’s very exciting to see them go from that pre operatively to this post operative butterfly. I don’t know how else to describe it. Seeing people come out of their shell, seeing their lives change and seeing them be so passionate about it makes me passionate about it. It enriches my life completely to help patients change their lives.
